Pink Shaded Text
Maryville, TN/ (______) High School:
“Please give me ____’s number, I’m begging you!”
Roxy glared at me, her hazy pink eyes scrutinizing me as she shut the door of her locker.
“An’ why should I give you my bestie’s number?” She twirled the tip of her blonde hair, still not letting up that suspicious look as she smirked, enjoying my embarrassment.
“You know why…” I whispered. “Why do you think I’ve been chasing you religiously for her number?”
She snorted. “Why don’t you just ask ____ herself?” Her smirk widened upon seeing my flushed face.
“Because I can’t speak p-properly when I’m around h-her.” I nearly screamed at my incompetence. Here I was, looking like the most pathetic chump on the planet all because I wanted to get my first love’s phone number.
“Roxy Lalonde, please believe me when I say this, ____ _____ makes my heart go crazy, I can’t think straight when she’s near.” Feeling my face get even hotter, I coughed, grateful that I was able to catch Roxy after school. It would have been even more mortifying if the halls were crowded and everyone knew about my crush on ____.
“She’s everything I want in a girl, and I’ve liked her since I first saw her in 9nth grade, so please, I’m begging you…help me win her.”
She appeared thoughtful for a moment. After several seconds, she sighed and shuffled through her purse, getting out a receipt and pen as she wrote down the digits that would help me connect with ____.
Reaching out to take the receipt, she suddenly pulled away. “Nope, not so fast Ganglish.”
I growled in frustration. “What is it now?”
“I’ll give you her number under two conditions.”
I folded my arms. “Name it.”
“You better not mention that I was the one that gave you her number, and…”
Roxy suddenly pulled the front of my shirt, causing me to yelp as she dragged me down to her level as she whispered, “If you break her heart, I’ll be sure to break your dick.”
Shoving me away, I gaped at her threat, feeling ice-cold fear creep into my veins. “Well, if that’s all, later Ganglish~!” With a smile and a wave, she skipped away, humming a beat, leaving me feeling even more anxious than before.
(________) High School Gym/ Wrestling Match:
I could feel _____’s eyes on me, making a surge of pride shoot through my veins.
I was probably being a show off right now, seeing as though my opponent was probably my easiest one.
Defeating him for the third time in a row, the ref declared me the winner. Looking over at ____, I saw Roxy was whispering in her ear. Oh God, I prayed that she didn’t tell ____ about what happened yesterday. Suddenly, ____ looked over at me, blushing that adorable blush, making me smile.
I waved at her, getting off the mat as I eagerly stepped within the locker room, showering quickly as I changed back into some new set of clothes.
Taking out my phone, I scrolled down until I reached her number. My breathing was slightly labored as my palms began to sweat. “Well, it’s now or never…”
Punching in her number, I typed out my first message.
Hey, I’ve wanted to talk to you for some time now… but I never had the courage to. How are you?
Hitting ‘send,’ I pocketed my phone and made my way out of the locker room into the gym where I was already met with a group of people.
“Jake, dude, nice job!” Dirk placed an arm around my head as my heart was racing. “Th-thanks Dirk!”
“Yeah, Jake, that was really awesome!” A girl I couldn’t quite place a name on began twirling her strand of auburn hair, blushing along with her other equally nameless friend.
Letting out a laugh, I thanked them for the compliment and proceeded to get out of the gym and into the hallway, seeing ____ leaning against her locker as she was looking at her phone with a baffled expression.
Oh crap oh crap ohcrap, she thinks I’m a creeper now doesn’t she?!
I hoped that none of them would see how nervous I was. I pretty much just witnessed my crush deleting my text because of how creepy it sounded. Following the group of people out of the school, I hurriedly texted back.
Hello? Are you still there?
“Hey, man, is everything okay?” Pocketing my phone again, I let out another nervous laugh. “Sorry Dirk, did you say something?”
He looked at me suspiciously behind his pointed shades. “Well, I was going to ask if you wanted to get some ice cream with the crew, you know, to celebrate your victory?”
Pfft, as if I could focus on eating when talking to ____. I felt my phone vibrate from my pocket, making my heart jump. “Ah, I would, but I feel pretty tired, so I think I’m just going to head home.” Yeah, that was a complete lie, but I didn’t really feel like going with them right now.
I heard a few disappointed sighs from the girls as Dirk shrugged. “It’s cool, some other time then?”
“Definitely.” Giving Dirk a quick bro fist, I nodded over to the two girls and began sprinting away, opening my phone as I read ____’s first reply.
-Sorry, I think you have the wrong number >w<!!
I nearly chuckled. Even through texts, she was adorable, using emoticons like that. I thought carefully about my reply, crossing the street as I reached my neighborhood.
No, I have the right number. You’re ____ _____.
You have pretty ______ hair, sweet smile, and you have this adorable habit of biting your lip when you’re nervous.
Sending it, a few seconds passed until my phone began vibrating again.
-Oh my god, who are you? And how did you get this number?!
Fuck fuck FUCK I messed up! Now she thinks that I’m really a stalker! Panicking, I remembered what Roxy told me, to not admit that she was the one who gave me ____’s number. “Way to go, Jake, way to fuck things up before anything could happen!”
Groaning, I typed out another rushed text in reply.
Please dont be scared, I prmise I’m not a stalker or anything! It’s just…I liek you a lot and haven’t had the chnce or courage to talk to you til now!!
And I found your no. through the school directory, sorry.
Sending it, I nearly cringed at the amount of spelling errors, but I had to make her understand…somehow.
Reaching my house, I bounded up the porch steps, unlocking the door as I went straight to my room. Feeling disappointed at seeing no reply, I sent her another text.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.
Sighing, I fell onto my bed, cradling my phone against my chest. About ten minutes passed and that was when I felt the familiar vibrations, indicating that I had a new message:
-Who are you, at least tell me your name.
Eh…I can’t… :[
-Why not? I don’t know this number…and you say that you like me, why?
Do I really need a reason to fall in love?
-That’s not the point though! The point is that I don’t know you! And you won’t tell me a thing about you!
I’ll tell you who I am…someday… when I have the guts to talk to you face to face.
-Well, regardless, I can’t return your feelings. I have someone that I like.
My heart was crushed. I kept reading that statement over and over again.
…I can’t return your feelings. I have someone that I like.
To be honest, I felt rage and an indescribable feeling of jealousy toward the man that held ____’s affections.
I nearly texted back demanding that she tell me his name so that I could kick his ass, like some douche possessive boyfriend.
Groaning, I threw my phone to the floor, breathing heavily as I tried to calm down and fight down these stupid, unreasonable feelings of betrayal.
“English, you stupid boy, she was never yours to begin with.”
The Next Day…
At the end of classes:
I was a zombie throughout all of my classes. Thoughts of ____ kept on plaguing my mind. Getting out of my class, I growled and sent her a text, not able to keep my rage bottled up any longer.
What’s he like?
Two minutes passed when I saw ____ get out of class, pulling Roxy along as she opened her phone, seeing my text as she gave her phone an annoyed look.
My phone vibrated as I read the reply.
-Would you give up and take a hint! I won’t fall for your tricks, I know that this has to be a prank of some sort!
Biting my lip, I had to hold back the urge to cry out in frustration. From a few feet away, I saw Roxy was laughing, muttering a few phrases to ____ before walking away. ____ began glaring at Roxy, letting out a frustrated sound as she began typing on her phone again.
Within a few seconds, I got the answer to my question.
-He’s got the cutest smile and messy black hair that looks soft to touch. His green eyes always light up when he smiles, and his laugh makes me feel warm, and I adore his glasses. He’s an athlete and could quite easily kick your ass if given the chance and I want him to look at me so much, but know that it isn’t possible. He’s always surrounded by a group of friends that adore him.
-Jake English is the boy I like and no one can make my feelings sway from him, not even you, so please leave me alone!
My heart stopped as a feeling of crushing relief overwhelmed me.
She…she’s liked me all this time…
I should have told her who I was to begin with.
Seeing ____’s back turned, I immediately made my move. Catching up to her in just a few strides, I grabbed her shoulder, making her gasp. I quickly turned her around and smashed my lips against hers, enjoying the soft feel of them compared to my own slightly chapped lips. Taking advantage of her surprise, I snuck a taste of her mouth, exploring it just a bit before pulling away.
Her shocked (color) eyes met my green irises as I spoke.
“I like you too.”
